THE HOST CITY SANDVIKEN
The company that subsequently came to be called Sandvikens Jernverk was founded in 1862 by Göran Fredrik Göransson, who was first in the world to succeed in using the Bessemer method for steel production on an industrial scale. And Sandviken started to grow. Mr Göransson also gave the name to the indoor Arena for bandy in Sandviken.
On January 1, 1943, the town of Sandviken was formed. Sandvikens Jernverk then changed its name to Sandvik AB. The company is Sandvikens largest employer and the main sponsor for SAIK Bandy. Its operations are based on materials technology and knowledge about industrial processes. This combination, coupled with research and development (R&D), has enabled Sandvik to achieve world-leading positions in several areas. Sandvik has 42 858 employees worldwide, of which just over 5 500 in Sandviken.
38 401 people live in Sandviken Municipality.
Bandy arena is Göransson Arena, which was inaugurated on May 30, 2009. The arena has an audience capacity of 4 000 people at bandy matches and about 10 000 people at concerts. Sandviken is home town for both the men’s team and women’s team of SAIK Bandy. Both teams plays in the Swedish Elitserien.
