THE HOST CITY UPPSALA

Uppsala city center lies on both banks of the river Fyrisån, about five kilometers above its outlet in the Mälaren at the Ekoln Bay. One of the Swedish main roads, E4, passes Uppsala from Stockholm on the eastern side of the city and continues to the north in Sweden.

Distinctive for Uppsala is the river “Fyrisån”, the cathedral and the castle. A sensitivity to the so-called Uppsala silhouette (the cathedral and castle seen from a distance) has long characterized Uppsala’s urban planning and is one of several reasons why the number of buildings taller than 5–6 stories is small. The city plan of 1643 still characterizes the city center’s street network. The square “Stora Torget”, with its closed corners and four converging main streets, is a unique place formation from the great power era.

Uppsala is hometown for two legendary bandy clubs, IFK Uppsala and IK Sirius. IFK Uppsala is host for this World Championship tournament. The club has won 11 Swedish Championships thru the history. IK Sirius has won 5 championships.
